What Exactly Is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a specialized form of dentistry focusing on the straightening of teeth and the treatment of dental and facial abnormalities. It also focuses on preventing oral issues that could lead to these abnormalities and crooked teeth.

When Should My Child See An Orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontics recommends that children see an orthodontist for an early screening visit at around age 7. This is so that dental growth and development can be assessed and monitored as they transition from their baby teeth to adult teeth, to hopefully avoid more complex and invasive orthodontic care in the future.

Unless a growth issue is detected (and early intervention treatment is recommended to aid the eruption of adult teeth, correct an early bite issue that will affect growth patterns or the health of the teeth), most orthodontic treatment is most effective when the child enters their growth phase and all adult teeth are in place (usually age 12-14 years of age). However, braces or Invisalign can still be an option for adults!

How Can I Care For My Teeth During Orthodontic Treatment?

  • ALWAYS remember to brush your teeth after every meal and floss at least once a day.
  • Make sure to use toothpaste that contains fluoride, and ask your orthodontist or family dentist if you need a fluoride rinse. This will help prevent cavities!
  • If you take out your retainer to eat, remember to keep it safe in its container so that it does not get lost or broken. Be sure to brush and floss after removing your retainer!
  • Keep your retainer clean by soaking it in a solution that includes retainer cleaner tablets. Do not put your retainer in boiling water or in the dishwasher.
  • During your treatment, try to avoid foods with a lot of sugar, which increases the number of bacteria growing in your mouth and causes more plaque and possibly cavities.
  • Avoid sticky and chewy foods (caramel, chewing gum, gummy bears), hard foods (hard candy, nuts, ice cubes), or any foods that could possibly get stuck in your braces (corn on the cob, soft bagels, ribs, taffy, etc.).
  • Be sure to schedule your routine checkups with your family dentist. It is recommended that you continue to visit the dentist every six months.

What Are Braces, Technically?

Braces are used by your orthodontist to help you improve the look and feel of your smile. There are several different types of braces, including:

  • Clear braces
  • Lingual braces
  • Self-ligating braces
  • Traditional metal braces

How Long Does Braces Treatment Take?

Treatment times vary, largely depending on the complexity of the case. For most patients, treatment will take somewhere between 1 and 3 years, with the average case being around 2 years. A custom treatment plan will be determined by Dr. Murdoch at an initial visit when a more accurate time frame will be advised.

Do Braces Hurt?

You may feel some discomfort for the first few days after you get your braces as your teeth, gums, tongue, and jaws get used to them. You also may feel discomfort for a day or so after they’re tightened. The rest of the time, your braces shouldn’t hurt.

Do I Need To Brush More Often With Braces?

With braces, you should brush your teeth at least three times a day to keep your teeth, gums, and mouth healthy and clean. Brushing regularly will help remove any food that may be caught between the braces. You should also floss daily to get in between your braces where your brush isn’t able to reach. Your orthodontist can show you how to properly brush and floss once your braces are placed.

Do I need Still Need Dental Checkups During Orthodontic Care?

Yes!

In fact, it’s even more important for patients receiving orthodontic treatment visit their dentist regularly. With braces, food may be caught in places your toothbrush can’t reach. This causes bacteria to build up, which can lead to cavities, gingivitis, and gum disease. Your dentist will work closely with your orthodontist to make sure your teeth stay clean and healthy while wearing braces.

Does Orthodontic Care Interfere With School, Sports, Instruments, Singing, etc?

Playing an instrument or a contact sport may require some adjustment when you first get your braces, but wearing braces will not stop you from participating in any of your school activities. If you play a contact sport, it is recommended that you wear a mouthguard to protect your braces or appliances.
